Recognizing Leaders in Learning

In a couple of weeks, Cable in the Classroom will join members of Congress, government officials, education leaders, and celebrities in saluting more than a dozen Leaders in Learning. Cable's signature education awards program honors the leaders who are out there in schools and communities, changing and improving teaching and learning. Several cable companies also sponsor teacher awards.

The cable industry recognizes that leadership is found at all levels in education. Perhaps you, yourself, are just winding down an effective and innovative project or planning one for the coming months. You could be one of next year's Leaders in Learning. Look for application information for 2007 late this fall, or learn more about the program at Cable's Leaders in Learning Awards.

Please note: with this issue, Access Learning magazine returns to its former name, Cable in the Classroom magazine. Same great content, fresh new cover!

Partners in Learning
How partnerships with cable companies are supporting students, teachers, schools, and communities.
Schools can't do it alone. It truly does take a village to support children's learning, wherever it occurs. Across the country, local cable companies are partnering with schools and community organizations in a variety of ways to help students learn better, teachers teach more effectively, and communities respond to a host of needs, from job training to recovering from natural disasters. The focus of a new category in Cable's Leaders in Learning Awards this year, these partnerships are helping to improve education, create job opportunities, and enhance the communities these cable companies serve...

Articles about New Thinking About High School Reform

Re-Visioning High School
How three districts created new visions of what high school should be in the 21st century.
Re-visioning is a process, one that involves the entire community. Re-visioning means appreciating that new kinds of schools will require new kinds of teachers. And re-visioning means finding ways to assure that the knowledge and skills students need for success are woven through the teaching and learning process. Re-visioning is about knowing that one size does not fit all -- that there can and should be many ways of assuring that all students graduate with a knowledge base that opens the doors of employment and further education, the skills and ability to compete in the global economy, and a lust for learning that makes their minds places in which they will enjoy spending the rest of their lives...

Building a 21st Century High School
The lessons of New Tech High: planning, building, and running a new kind of school for a new kind of student.
Working with the school district, the high-tech business community of Napa , Calif. , helped create a vision for a different kind of high school, where students were placed in an environment that better reflected the workplace environment. Traditional academic content was made more relevant through real-world application. Students worked in teams with their peers every day and had access to technology resources to produce professional results. Four years of focus groups, site visits, and research were invested in the new school before it opened. The result was a significant step in reinventing the American high school: a small school named New Technology High School (NTHS)...
